Abstract

The paper analyses the development and emerging conceptualisations of the European Research Area and its implication on developing skillfull, competitive, and innovative researchers. The approach proposed by the authors includes a comparative analysis of the EU and national policies used to develop innovative researchers able to initiate successful research careers. Comparisons will be made between 4 EU countries (Romania included) and between higher education institutions with a major research orientation. The aim of the paper is to identify the new competencies needed on EU research market as well as the mechanisms to develop, sustain and promote successful research careers, results that can be applied in designing training programmemes at doctoral and postdoctoral level.
