title = "A methodology for assessing rock mass damage in underground mining",
abstract = "The assessment of rock mass damage in underground mining environment is vital in stope design since it can assist in determining the extent of the excavation-damaged zone, min- imizing stope dilution and also improve ground support measures. Hence, the aim of this paper is to assess the rock mass damage including the inherent damage and mining-induced based on rock mass characteristics. A methodology based on the rock engineering system is implemented to define the Rock Mass Damage index (RMDi) and to quantify its influencing parameters. Historical data of drift excavations in Birchtree mine are used. The input parameters consist of the rock mass parameters and the excavation characteristics. The RMDi values are compared to the excavation overbreak and underbreak. The results suggest good correlation. It is concluded that the RMDi system could be used as a design tool to assess rock mass damage related to drill-and-blast and mechanical excavation in mine development.",
